Both manual and chain operated saws will cut through any size root.

If you are digging a long hole, like cutting a trench for an irrigation pipeline or something, you can sever a lot of feeder roots and cause considerable damage and stress to the tree. If you want to avoid this, it’s better to drill a hole through the ground a few feet further down and thread the pipe through that, rather than digging down to the desired depth from the top. Although a trencher can be used to cut through roots, it was designed for creating trenches in soil and may not be able to handle large roots.

The tree will likely die or fall, or both.

bushremove.pw We have posted several trencher posts over the last couple of years, and inevitably we get comments similar to,"you're showing that trenching in clean soil, bet it can't handle tree roots." Here is an example of the trencher cutting through a tree trunk! This shows how the trencher can cut through tree roots while it's trenching through the dirt.

Disclaimer - The ky is not intended for cutting trees. Yes you can. Can I cut tree roots without killing the tree?

Draw a line where you want to remove the root.

Root cutting and removal can indeed be accomplished without crippling or killing your tree. Trunk Proximity – The closer to the trunk that roots are cut, the more significant and severe the damage will be to your tree. 25% Rule – Never remove more than 25% of a tree’s roots.
